On the iconic roads of Italian cycling, in the land of the great champions Fausto Coppi and Costante Girardengo, the Belgian rider perfectly capitalised on a fast and frantic finish, surprising the peloton with a powerful and precise move just a few kilometres from the line. The 175 km stage, starting from Imperia and heading towards Piedmont, presented a route open to various tactical interpretations.
